A Simple First Birthday Photoshoot Checklist for Ottawa Families
A first birthday photoshoot is a chance to remember your child as they are right now: curious, expressive and full of their own ideas. You do not need to make every moment look like a birthday invitation. A little preparation can help you arrive relaxed and leave room for the personality you want to remember.

Choose the birthday portraits you would love to keep
Think about what matters most before choosing outfits or decorations. Would you love a simple portrait of your child, a playful birthday set, a photograph with siblings or a family portrait that includes everyone? Knowing your priorities makes the styling decisions easier.
The nautical set shown here brings together blue tones, a striped outfit and a birthday cake. Your own session can have a different mood. Use ideas as inspiration and choose a look that feels right for your child rather than trying to recreate every detail of another photograph.
Pack one main outfit and a spare
Try the outfit on before the day and check that your child can sit and move comfortably. Bring the complete look, including any shoes or accessories you want photographed. A spare outfit is useful even if you are planning a simple session.
If your plans include cake or a messy activity, pack a clean change for afterwards and consider a spare top for yourself. Keep everything together in an easy-to-reach bag so a change does not turn into a search through several bags.
Bring the small comforts that help your child settle
A familiar toy, comfort item and the essentials you normally take on an outing can help the studio feel less unfamiliar. Parents know their own child best, so think about what makes transitions easier for your family.
When choosing among available appointment times, consider your child’s usual routine. It is helpful to give yourselves time to arrive without rushing. Avoid building a packed day around the session if a quieter schedule would suit your child better.
Plan outfits for parents and siblings too
Even when the birthday child is the focus, you may want to step into a few photographs together. Choose coordinating colours and comfortable clothes for anyone joining in. Pack adult outfits before the morning of the session so they do not become the last thing on your list.
There is no extra charge for additional people in a portrait session. Include who is coming in your booking details so your family groupings can be considered alongside the birthday portraits.
Expect personality rather than a perfect performance
Some children smile immediately; others want to look around first. The serious expressions, curious fingers and little pauses can be just as meaningful as the big smiles. Leave room for a portrait that feels like your child.
Standard sessions are scheduled for up to two hours, with guided posing and styling along the way. You view your photographs after the session and choose your favourites. Visit the first birthday and kids page for the current session details and book your available date online.
