What to Wear for Newborn Family Photos in Ottawa

By Kayla Photography ·

You have a new baby, a changing routine and plenty to think about. Choosing clothes for your newborn family photos does not need to become another big project. Start with outfits that feel comfortable, then bring the colours together so the focus stays on your connection. At Kayla Photography in Ottawa, your session is guided, so you do not need to arrive knowing how to pose or coordinate every detail.

Start with one comfortable outfit

Choose your own outfit first, especially if you are the person who finds clothes hardest to decide on. Look for something that lets you sit, stand and hold your baby comfortably. A soft knit, a simple dress or a favourite shirt can be a good starting point.

Try the complete outfit on before your session. Sit down, lift your arms and check how the fabric feels. Clothes that need constant adjusting can distract you from enjoying the photographs. There is no need to buy an entirely new wardrobe if you already have pieces you love.

Coordinate your family’s colours without matching everything

Pick two or three colours that work together rather than putting everyone in identical outfits. Cream, warm beige and soft brown create a gentle palette; deeper tones can make a richer portrait. Think about the finished photograph and where you might display it at home.

The portrait here keeps the clothing and baby’s wrap close in tone. That leaves room for faces, hands and expression to become the important details. This is one approach rather than a rule: your family’s style matters too.

Keep newborn photo outfits simple

Large logos, busy lettering and strong competing patterns can draw attention away from faces. If one person wears a pattern, let the other outfits be quieter. Check small details such as visible undershirts, bright socks and bulky pockets before leaving home.

Bring a spare outfit for your baby and a backup top for yourself. Little interruptions are part of a newborn session. Having a change ready makes them easier to handle without worrying about the clothes you planned.

Help siblings feel like themselves

Choose clothes children can move in and try them on ahead of time. A comfortable familiar outfit often works better than something they are reluctant to wear. Keep accessories optional so the session can stay flexible.

Parents and siblings are welcome in newborn portraits. You can plan a full family photograph, individual parent-and-baby portraits and smaller groupings within the same session. Mention the people you would love to include in your booking details.

Leave room for a calm newborn photography session

Newborn sessions at the Ottawa studio are scheduled for up to three hours, allowing time for feeding, soothing and settling. We may finish sooner once the photographs are captured. Your clothing plan should support that relaxed pace.

You do not need a list of perfect poses. Kayla guides the details, and you choose your favourite portraits after the session. For session information, what is included and available dates, explore the newborn page and book online when you are ready.
